Tripoli, 26 January 2014:
Tripoli narrowly beat rivals Benghazi City Rugby Club 10-9 in a closely-fought match at Tripoli’s Sports . . .[restrict]City, winning the Libya Cities League.
Director of Libyan Rugby Tarek Benrewin told the Libya Herald that, despite a tense final ten minutes, the home team dominated throughout the first half of Friday’s match with a half-time score of 10-3. Benghazi fought back in the second half converting their third penalty seventy minutes in but could not break a strong Tripoli defence.
The match was a closer run affair than the teams’ previous meeting which saw Tripoli win the Libya Cities’ Cup last month.
The Libya Cities’ League currently has only two teams, Benghazi City and Tripoli City. Benrewin said, however, that with rugby becoming an increasingly poplar sport in Libya and another team in training in Tripoli, this looks likely to change.
There are hopes that the Libyan teams will play at the beginning of February in a series of friendlies with three Tunisian teams and Alexandria City Rugby Club, but these are yet to be confirmed. [/restrict]
