Tripoli, 8 January 2014:
The head of the Benghazi office of the United Nations Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Georges . . .[restrict]Nasr, has died in his Beirut home.
“It is with much sadness that UNSMIL staff were informed that our colleague Nasr passed away at his home in Beirut, Lebanon,” UNSMIL said. “Nasr was an exemplary professional and generous colleague to all of us, not only in his years with UNSMIL but throughout his UN career.”
Nasr had been the head of UNSMIL’s Benghazi Office since early 2012. “He worked tirelessly and with great professional enthusiasm to ensure the Mission remained active in the east of Libya,” UNSMIL said in a statement released today.
Nasr started working for the UN in 1997, in areas of both political and humanitarian affairs. In Libya for the past two years, he had previously worked in Lebanon, Iraq, Nepal and New York. “He earned a reputation as a sound analytical thinker, clear and compelling writer, and kind and considerate colleague and manager,” UNSMIL said.
One friend in Libya described Nasr as: “An outstanding professional with an almost unequalled knowledge of Libya.” He added that Nasr’s death was a great loss both to friends and to the UN.
Nasr leaves behind a wife and two young children, as well as his wider family in Beirut.
A Facebook page entitled, ‘In the Loving Memory of Georges Nasr’ has been set up and comments, condolences and memories are welcomed. [/restrict]
