Tripoli, 24 December 2013:
A member of the Special Forces was shot dead and a civilian seriously wounded in a car blast . . .[restrict]today, in two separate incidents in Benghazi.
Special Forces officer Salah Elmargharni died after gunmen opened fire on him in the Sabri district of the city, according to Libyan news agency LANA. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Benghazi Medical Centre.
In a separate attack in the city, a 23 year-old civilian was seriously injured when an explosive device fitted to the vehicle he was driving detonated. He was rushed to Benghazi’s Al-Jalaa Hospital where he had to undergo emergency surgery to amputate part of one leg, LANA said.
American newspaper the Global Post reported that the second victim was the son of a senior Naval officer. It quoted a security source as saying that the officer, who was in Russia on a training programme, had received a number of threats. [/restrict]
