Tripoli, 3 November 2013:
Under the banner ‘9 November Movement’, a group of Libyans are calling for nationwide demonstrations at . . .[restrict]the weekend, demanding the re-election of the General National Congress (GNC).
The movement was thought up by 15 people from different towns and cities across Libya, according to one of the organisers, Ahmed Ben Mousa. Its purpose is to encourage the Libyan people to exercise their right to select or reject the current GNC, Ben Mousa told the Libya Herald.
He added that the 9 November Movement was not affiliated to any particular party, person, organisation or political ideology.
“We have two main demands. The first one is to call for the re-election of the GNC, but only according to the individual system rather than the list system of political parties,” Ben Mousa said. He added that this re-election should be on 24 December, coinciding with the election of the 60-Commission, which will write the constitution.
The second demand is for this newly-elected GNC to assign an independent national figure to form “a crisis government.” This, Ben Mousa said, should be exclusively made up of qualified and experienced people.
The 9 November Movement aimed to educate people on how to choose their political representatives, after what he said was the “bad experience” of the current GNC. Ben Mousa pointed out, however, that the movement does not have any “magical solutions” for all the country’s problems.
The nationwide demonstration is planned for Saturday 9 November, a date chosen because more people are usually able to attend a weekend demonstration. Ben Mousa said that exact locations of the demonstrations could not yet be announced, “for security reasons.” He added that it was a completely peaceful and young persons’ movement. [/restrict]
