Benghazi, 14 October 2013:
The now seemingly daily round of bloodletting in Benghazi continued today with the murder of another . . .[restrict]security official. Islam Faraj Assosa, a member of the police force, died instantly when a bomb blew up under his car. The attack, this afternoon, occurred in the Sports City district, according to Joint Operations room spokesman Abdullah Zeidi.
Although Assosa’s father is said to have been a military prosecutor who served in the Qaddafi era, the killings in Benghazi are no longer seen as revenge attacks on former regime supporters – rather an attempt by militants to destroy the post-revolution state with the aim of taking over.
Meanwhile, it has been announced that Sheikh Abdussalam Al-Hassi, the imam who was gravely injured when a bomb blew up under his car on Friday, died yesterday evening at Benina Airport. He had lost a leg in the attack and was due to be flown to Tunis for treatment there. His funeral took place in Benghazi today at the Omar bin Khattab Mosque in the Salam district.
Rumours that a State of Emergency will be declared in Benghazi are baseless.
