Tripoli, 6 October 2013:
The Libyan government has apologised for last week’s attack on the Russian embassy and has said . . .[restrict]it will pay for damages.
Libya’s interim charge d’affaires in Russia, Salem Sahiti, told Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov that Libya was ready to compensate in full for damage to the embassy compound, according to Russian news agency Ria Novosti. He added that Libya strongly condemned the criminal attack.
The embassy was stormed by a group of armed men from Suq Al-Juma on Wednesday, in retaliation for the killing of prominent revolutionary leader Mohammed Andals Suaissi, allegedly by a Russian national.
Russia evacuated 52 diplomatic staff and their families after the attack.
Gatilov said that Moscow expected the Libyan government to fulfil its international obligations to investigate the incident, punish anyone found guilty of involvement and ensure necessary security for the Russian diplomatic mission, so it could resume operations. [/restrict]
