Tripoli, 4 August 2013:
It is reported that there was an attempt today to assassinate the former interim Chief of Staff, Brigadier . . .[restrict]Salem Gnaidi. According to the Libyan news agency LANA, the General Staff have issued a statement condemning an attempt on Gnaidi’s life in El Mamorah district west of Tripoli while he was returning home from his office.
It said that he was shot in the right leg by gunmen and was taken to Zawia hospital for treatment.
LANA said the wound was not serious and that he was released from hospital this evening.
Other reports, however, say that the gunmen were trying to steal his car and that it was a guard who was shot in the leg.
It is thought that the gunmen may be the same as those who earlier in the day attacked the Major General Abdel Fattah Younis army barracks, formerly known as Camp 27, stealing weapons, ammunition and equipment.
The assault was on the same day that Major-General Abdulsalam Al-Obaidi took up his duties as the new Chief of Staff at a ceremony in Tripoli. [/restrict]
