Tripoli, 30 August 2013:
The National Security Committee of Congress says it has received “highly secret reports” from intelligence chief . . .[restrict]Salem Hassi about the wave of assassinations and attacks in Benghazi and elsewhere in recent weeks.
“The reports are very important and contain crucial information but which can not be divulged at present time,” Rujban Congressman Abubakr Abdulgader told the Libya Herald. He is the current chairman of the National Security Committee.
Revealing such information might increase tensions on the Libyan street, Abdulgader said, noting that this had to be avoided given the present security climate.
The committee has called for urgent talks with the Chief of Staff Abdulsalam Jadallah Al-Obeidi and Hassi to discuss the contents, Abdulgader said.
He also revealed that there were ongoing discussions among Congress members about forming a military force, under the control of Congress, to maintain security. He did not say how it would relate to the regular army or the Libya Shield forces or whether it would be answerable the President of Congress, Nuri Abu Sahmain. In his additional role of Commander-in-Chief, the latter has now taken effective charge of the existing armed forces. [/restrict]
