Tripoli, 24 July 2013:
The US embassy iftar (breaking fast) meal organized Tuesday evening at an events hall in Al-Dul Street in Ben Ashour continued, despite the security scare.
Guests arriving were informed at the entrance that neither the new US ambassador Deborah K. Jones nor any US citizens working at the embassy would be attending the event.
Nevertheless, despite some guests returning or not turning up, there was still quite a sizable turnout for the dinner.
And at least two ambassadors/Charge D’Affairs attended the event despite the security scare.
The US embassy Cultural Affairs officer read a statement on behalf of his ambassador in which she apologized for her absence, condemned terrorism and pledged to continue to standby Libya.
Despite the apparent failed attack on the Corinthia hotel in downtown Tripoli, there was nevertheless a pleasant atmosphere at the event.
An imam called for prayer at sunset (maghreb) and a jamaa (group) sunset prayer was conducted within the hall. [/restrict]
