Founder of 17 February Coalition assassinated in Benghazi

By Ahmed Elumami.

Abdulsalam Musmari – lawyer, political activist and a popular local figure in Benghazi
Benghazi, 26 July 2013:
A lawyer and political activist, Abdulsalam Musmari, who was one the founders of the 17 February . . .[restrict]Coalition, was assassinated today in Benghazi after Jumaa prayers.

Musmari was shot at around 1.45 pm as he walked home from the Abu Ghoula mosque in Benghazi’s Birkah district.

“He had a bullet directly in his heart,” spokesman for Benghazi Joint Security Forces (BJSF) Mohamed Hejazi told the Libya Herald. “This was a very accurate attack and the BJSF thinks that it could have been the work of a sniper.”

There were no witnesses to the attack.

Musmari is reported to have been a strong critic of the Muslim Brotherhood. In 2011, he claimed to have received a death threat after criticising the role of Islamists in the NTC and the Union of Revolutionary Fighters. In an interview, he said: “Please deliver this message to those who want to kill me: ‘Let’s talk’.”

Musmari also pointed out that during the 2011 revolution Libyans opposed to Qaddafi all had the same cause . At the time he said: “We need a constitution that gives rights to all factions of society.”
