Tripoli, 3 June 2013:
The General National Congress has approved the appointment of Saleh Hamid Mahjoub as Minister of Agriculture, . . .[restrict]Livestock and Fisheries. He was nominated last week by the Prime Minister, Ali Zeidan, to replace Ahmed Al Urfi whose resignation was made public last week.
Mahjoub’s nomination was approved 103 members out of 133. No one opposed but 30 Congress members abstained according to Kabaw Congressman Juma Shawish, a member of Congress’ Agriculture Committee.
Shawish added that the Committee would work on a plan to avoid the challenges and difficulties that the former minister faced.
According to the Prime Minister last week, Urfi had submitted his resignation for personal reasons and had agreed to remain on office until a replacement was found. However, a senior official at the Ministry told the Libya Herald that the resignation was the result of concerns about security.
He said that Ministry projects had been the subject of repeated attacks which the authorities had done nothing to prevent. [/restrict]
