The inaugural Gharyan Rally was launched today, with the first of three days of mountain road races.
The opening stage of the 80 km rally, in which 32 drivers from all over Libya are competing, roared off from Abu Gheilan, Gharyan.
“We hope that such event will provide a sound learning base for amateur Libyan race cars drivers,” one of the organisers told the Libya Herald today.
The Gharyan Rally is the first mountain race ever to be staged in Libya. Organisers anticipate that events such as this will establish the foundations of a Libyan National Club for Motor Sports.
The organisers also hope that one day there will be a 3,000 km nationwide rally.
The Gharyan Rally is being supported by the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Youth and Sport and Gharyan local council.
