Benghazi’s position as the Libyan Capital of Culture will . . .[restrict]be launched with a carnival this weekend.
It will begin with a parade starting from Tahrir Square, which will proceed along Independence Street, ending at the Tibesti Hotel.
The procession will include floats from various groups and organisations, including the Scouts, fashion students and children. Vehicles participating will be decorated in imaginative and artistic ways.
The organisers promise that there will be something for everyone, with music, and opportunities for people to try horse-riding or sailing on the lake. The Air Force will also put on a display of motorcycles and historic vehicles.
After sunset, 1,000 candles will be lit on and around Benghazi’s lake. There will also be a laser light-show and, as the grand finale, a firework display, with the pyrotechnics being set off from Golian Bridge and Benghazi lake.
Benghazi was chosen to be Libya’s Capital of Culture in September last year by the Ministry of Culture. The title was designed to encourage cultural activities in towns and cities across the country and, every year, a new centre will be chosen.
Benghazi has long been considered a cultural rival to Tripoli, and a number of events, including a film festival in February, have already taken place this year. [/restrict]
