Benghazi, 20 April, 2013:
State-run schools in Benghazi appear set to reopen tomorrow, following Thursday’s almost total shutdown, when teachers . . .[restrict]walked out on strike.
One teacher told the Libya Herald this evening that Thursday’s action had be a spontaneous protest prompted by a range of issues, not the least of which is the enduring late payment of salaries. Teachers were also, he said, angry at the presence of former regime members in the Ministry of Education, the poor local education facilities, a lack of resources and continuing concerns over the physical security of school building and the teachers and pupils within them.
The teacher did not rule out future industrial action, if the Education Ministry did not address the strikers’ grievances.
