Benghazi, 15 February 2013:
There was an attempt to assassinate another prominent Benghazi security figure today. A bomb was thrown . . .[restrict]at the car of Ahmed Al-Araq, in front of his house in the city’s Al-Birkah district. However, no one was hurt.
Araq commanded a revolutionary brigade in the city during 2011. According to security sources, he had received a number of threats on his mobile phone in recent days.
There had been concerns that there might be violence in Benghazi today to coincide with the demonstrations in support of more powers and investment in the east of the country — and as a result security has been high. It is not thought, however, that the attempt was directly linked to the protests.
There has been a spate of assassinations and attempted assassinations of prominent security officials in the city over the past year, as well as attacks on courts and buildings belonging to the security forces.
