Tripoli, 13 January 2013:
The Ministry of Interior announced today, Sunday, the creation of a committee to investigate complaints from the public . . .[restrict]about security officers abusing power or exceeding their authority.
The committee is to be headed by Kamal Hassan Bizazah.
According to Interior Ministry spokesman Magdi Al-Arafi, the committee will verify all allegations and, if found to be true, will take legal action against the culprits.
The decision follows an announcement by the Interior Ministry’s Undersecretary Omar El Khadrawi on Thursday after deadly clashes in Tripoli that a committee of enquiry would be set up to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death last week of an alleged drug dealer from Tripoli’s Fashloum district. Khadrawi said the man had been unlawfully killed by a support unit linked to the SSC.
Prime Minister Ali Zeidan said at the same time that the leader of the unit would be questioned and brought to account if evidence showed there was a case against him. [/restrict]
