Tripoli, 27 December:
The local council in Rajban condemned the “media campaign” being waged against the military prosecutor, Brigadier General Masud Irhoma . . .[restrict]Miftah, in a statement issued last night.
Members of the council wrote of their “strong disapproval and condemnation of this defamatory campaign that has been launched by some media channels against Brigadier General Masud Irhoma Miftah and which has no basis in the truth”.
In the statement, the council said that Miftah had been one of the first officers to defect to join the revolution against Qaddafi last year, and that he had been fully cleared of charges relating to his involvement with the previous regime.
Rajban Council claimed that the campaign was being propagated by a number of different media outlets, without naming any channels or publications specifically, and said that “opportunists who put their own personal interests and political agendas before the greater national interest” were behind the rumours about Miftah.
Media sources in Libya should strive to report events with “precision, credibility and transparency”, the council urged in the communique. [/restrict]
