Tripoli, 21 October:

Congressman Adel Asharshari, the independent member for Sorman, was attacked west of Tripoli yesterday and his car stolen.

The incident . . .[restrict]appears to have been that of common theft.  He was driving not far from Camp 27, which at the time was under attack from Qaddafi supporters, when he was stopped. He was asked to produced identity and get out of the car, a BMW. When he showed them his Congress card the thieves hit him, pushed him aside and drove off in the vehicle.

It is now being rumoured that the congressman was kidnapped today. “We’ve heard the rumours but cannot confirm anything”, said Benghazi Congressman Alaeddin Mgariaf, adding that Asharshari’s family would have made a statement if the report were true.

Car theft has become a major issue in post-revolution Libya. The Libya Herald has been informed of several instances but also that, when informed, the police say there is nothing they can do. [/restrict]
