Tripoli, 2 May:
In response to the torture allegations raised on Tuesday by the United Nations Support Mission In Libya (UNSMIL), the . . .[restrict]Misrata branch of the Supreme Security Committee has said that it is committed to all human rights and standards in all areas – including the prevention of torture, beatings or insults as well as ensuring standards of health and food and the protection of people’s lives.
In a statement on the conditions of prisoners under its control, including the three prisoners that died under its authority, the Supreme Security Committee, Misrata branch, announced that investigations regarding this were underway.
The Committee said that until the results of the prosecutor’s investigation were available it would not be possible to attribute the cause of the prisoners’ death to torture or any other cause.
This statement was in response to the 1 May statement released by UNSMIL, and published by Libya Herald, regarding the three detainees who died on 13 April. UNSMIL believed that the detainees may have died as a result of torture.
It also believes that at least seven other cases may have suffered torture at the same facility [/restrict]
