Tripoli, 30 April 2012:
The General Union of Libyan Journalists at a meeting in Tripoli on Sunday elected Mutaz Ben Hamid as president . . .[restrict]and Abdul-Karim Al-Sharif as vice-president, Seven others were elected to the executive committee: Ashour Mukhtar Kamashi, Mohammed Elmsalati, Salima Shaab, Tohami Muftah Alghoul, Abdul-Basit Ehmidan, Asmaa Bin Saeed and Muamer Birfad. The meeting was attended by union branches in eight Libyan towns and cities, under the supervision of a media member of the NTC of and leaders of some civil society institutions.
“We will defend and ensure the right of journalists to work freely without being subjected to any kind of threats,” the union’s president said afterwards. He also said the union would work ensure journalists had their salaries increased and had decent living conditions so as to secure their future and the future of their families.
He confirmed its determination to develop and raise the standards of union workers to professional levels and increase their skills though new training programs.
The General Union of Libyan Journalists began last Sunday, to accept new membership to the association.
