Tripoli, 9 March: Ajdabiya has become the latest town to announce local elections. The leader of the local council has announced . . .[restrict]that they will take place “within 45 days”.

The decision to hold elections follows the appointment several new members of the town council.  This created a major row. There were protests that their selection was illegal because they had not been elected.  Others protested that they should have been selected instead.  As a result of the chaos, the revised council has not met for over a week.

In the end it has been decided to have elections for the whole council to give it legitimacy.

A commission to oversee the the vote, draw district boundaries within the municipality and decide how many councilors there will be per district is to be set up and members appointed.
