A convoy of four trucks accompanied by another four gun-mounted vehicles sped along Tripoli’s corniche on Saturday afternoon, heading for the central bank. The trucks contained the new Libyan LD10 notes which had just been flown in to the city’s Mitiga airbase from France.
The new notes are fundamentally the same as the old except the reverse is now in English and there references to Qaddafi’s Jamahiriya.
Libya has contracted with France to print four billion-worth of dinars.
Last August, the British government released LD1.9 worth of Libyan banknotes ordered by the Qaddafi regime and printed in the UK but which had been impounded during the revolution.
