Tripoli, 18 June:
50 people have been killed and 259 wounded in recent clashes around Kufra, Sebha and the Zintan-Shagiga region, according . . .[restrict]to a senior official at the Ministry of Health.
Mahdi Alordma, the ministry’s undersecretary, said that the casualty figures were five dead and 34 wounded in Sebha, 13 dead and 63 wounded in Kufra, and 32 dead and 162 wounded in Mizdah and Shagiga.
Government forces are now deployed in all three areas in a bid to broker ceasefires and restore stability.
Yesterday, the UN’s Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Libya, Ian Martin, called for an end to the fighting and urged the government to address the root causes of the conflicts.
A joint statement was also issued yesterday by 12 political parties contending in next month’s National Conference elections, in which they called for an immediate end to the violence and the speedy development of the national army. [/restrict]
