Tripoli, 19 April:
The Undersecretary of the Justice Ministry, Wael Najm, announced on Wednesday that the ministry had now taken control of . . .[restrict]30 prisons in Libya that had previously been under the control of the thuwar (revolutionaries).
Among them is Huda Rehabilitation Institute near the city. It had been handed over the same day. Located near Misrata, it is holding around 1,000 said to be members of Qaddafi brigades and agents of the former regime accused of war crimes committed during last year’s revolution.
A ceremony to mark the its handover was attended by Najm as well as the military prosecutor, the chief of the judicial police, representatives of Misrata local council and leaders of the thuwar in the city.
The Rehabilitation Institute in Dafneya had also been handed over to the security forces from the Ministry of Justice. It was handed over by the Saraya Swehli brigade which just days ago handed over the Women’s Military Academy in Tripoli.
These handovers are considered an important step in the country’s move towards law and order and the credibility of public institutions.
A Misrata thuwar spokesman said that with the handover of these prisons, they had fulfilled their obligations to hand over prisons to the state, represented in this case by the Ministry of Justice.
