The deputy president of the reconstituted General National Congress, Salah Makhzoum, has resigned from the four-man . . .[restrict]team chosen by Congress members to negotiate in the UNSMIL-brokered dialogue which until now taken place in Geneva.
No reason has been given for his decision. Last Thursday, it was Makhzoum who announced that Congress had changed its mind and would participate in the dialogue after delegates meeting in Geneva agreed with Congress’ demand that future talks should be held in Libya.
The Justice and Construction Party, of which Makhzoum is a member, has called for the GNC to join in the dialogue, but he and others within the rump Congress who have been willing to join the dialogue are reported to have come under intense pressure from their more hardline colleagues and parts of Libya Dawn based in and around the capital to have nothing to do with the UN initiative.
There has been no statement about the position of Congress’s other three delegates: Congress spokesman Omar Hemidan, Mohamed Al-Amari from Benghazi and Mohamed Emazab from Ajdabiya. The latter two are both said to be members of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Misrata Congress member Omar Abu Leefa was also invited to join the dialogue in an advisory capacity. [/restrict]
