Tripoli, 27 December 2014:
Sirte has seen over a week of sporadic airstrikes that have hit the port and . . .[restrict]the local airbase, as it becomes the latest town to be targeted by the Libyan National Army (LNA) as part of its offensive against Libya Dawn.
The Gurda Ben Airbase on the outskirts of the town was targeted and its runway hit earlier this week, a Local Council Spokesman told the Libya Herald. The port and a power station have also both been struck, causing some damage to buildings, as well as a farm.
Airstrikes started last week and had been intermittent, he said.
No-one had been killed or injured in any of the attacks, the spokesman said, adding that the skies had been quiet for the last two days.
A local resident said the airstrikes had been taking place on an almost a daily basis. He described life in Sirte as “completely miserable” and said it was “becoming like Derna” with a rising presence of extremists.
An LNA source confirmed that airstrikes were being carried out in the town, but gave no further details. [/restrict]
