London, 21 December 2016:

The Serraj-led GNA, through its Ministry of Finance, has called for an urgent meeting with the Central Bank of Libya (CBL) board.

In a letter dated yesterday and addressed to the ‘’Governor of the Central Bank of Libya’’, GNA Minister of Finance-elect Osama Hamad called for the CBL board to meet urgently.

The letter said that the call for the meeting comes in the context of coordinating efforts to remove the obstacles for the best achievement of the objectives of monetary and fiscal policy which would reduce the impact of the economic crisis that threatens the lives of everyday citizens.

Furthermore, the letter called for the meeting to suggest necessary and urgent temporary measures to provide the GNA with the finances needed.

The letter nominated Deputy Minister Abu Bakr Alajafal as representative of the GNA in connection with meetings with the Central Bank.

It will be recalled that the Libyan Political Agreement (LPA), which gave birth to the GNA, is a year old this month. It is widely seen as having failed as it has failed to impose security in the country and failed to solve Libya’s financial and economic problems.

Whilst the Tripoli-based CBL led by Saddek Elkaber has on the face of it recognized the legitimacy of the Serraj-led GNA, it has in practice failed to provide the necessary finances the GNA has needed in order to operate effectively.
