Algeria became the first Arab country to send a minister to Tripoli for talks with . . .[restrict]prime minister-designate Faiez Serraj and the Presidency Council with the visit today of its Minister for Maghreb, African and Arab League affairs, Abdelkader Messahel. He and his delegation were welcomed by preime minister-designate Faiez Serraj at the Bu Setta naval base which currently serves as the council’s headquarters.
At a press conference afterwards with PC member Ahmed Maetig, Messahel reiterated his Algeria’s backing of the Libyan Political Agreement and the Government of National Accord and its willingness to provide Libya with practical support.
“We offer everything in our power to help our sister Libya in the [current] circumstances,” he said.
He added that talks with the Serraj and Maetig had, in part, focused on joint border security.
The reopening of Algeria’s embassy in Tripoli was also discussed, with Maetig indicating that it would be the first Arab embassy to reopen. No date for such a reopening was given, however.
Algeria closed its embassy in May 2014 after the ambassador’s residence was attacked.
The Algerian visit follows those of foreign ministers from Italy, France, Germany and the UK. [/restrict]
