Tunis, 16 April 2016:

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has told prime minister-designate Faiez Serraj that his country’s embassy . . .[restrict]is looking to return to Tripoli soon and that Turkish Airlines will also restart flying to Libya.

Serraj met Erdogan yesterday in Istanbul prior to flying back to Tripoli after the summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). During the meeting Erdogan reiterated Turkey’s support for the Libyan Political Agreement and Serraj’s Government of National Accord. For his part, Serraj called on Turkish companies to return to Libya and start work again. He also urged them to look at potential new projects in the country.

On the sidelines of the Islamic summit, Serraj held a series of meetings with heads of state or government or ministers from Muslim countries so as to promote the GNA and Libya. These included, significantly, the Emir of Qatar as well as Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, the speaker of the Algeria’s national assembly and the Saudi Foreign Minster Adel Al-Jubeir.

The latter promised Saudi support for the GNA in several fields but especially on counter-terrorism and fighting the so-called Islamic State (IS)

In his speech to the OIC on Friday, Serraj had stressed the need to eliminate IS in Libya and elsewhere which he described as a “cancer” as well as the eradication of organised crime and illegal immigration.
