Tripoli, 25 November 2o15:
The Rada (“deterrence”) force in Tripoli have denied arresting the head of the religious endowments . . .[restrict]ministry’s Tripoli office, Mohamed Atkitek, and questioning him about recruitment for the Islamic State (IS) organisation. Earlier it had been reported that gunmen had stormed his office today and seized him.
According to a Rada statement, Atkitek was simply asked in for questioning about the radicalisation of some Libyans at a number of mosques in the capital and their recruitment for IS. He had come in, cooperated and had left, Rada said.
It added, however, that it had expressed its reservations about Atkitek’s competence for the job to Tripoli prime minister Khalifa Ghwell. It had wanted him removed because he had not faced up to what as going on in some of the capital’s mosques where recruitment for IS was taking place. It also alleged that he had erred in his appointment of some imams.
Rada claimed that it had received information about IS recruitment from detainees. It added that it was looking for a number of individuals involved in the process.
