The Grand Mufti, Sheikh Sadik Al-Ghariani, has accused Iran of trying to spread Shiism in the country.
His office confirmed yesterday that he had made the accusation in his sermon at the Agha mosque in his home are of Tajoura, Tripoli, on Friday 25 May.
He said that Iranians in Libya had been seen distributing books related to Shiism and encouraging people to convert to it. He claimed that Iranians were enticing young Libyan by offering them free trips to Tehran including free accommodation in top hotels, pretending that it was all part of Iran’s support to Libya.
The Grand Mufti said that some Libyan families have contacted Dar Al-Iftaa which he heads, warning that their children might convert to atheism or heretical doctrines, among which mentioned that of the Al-Ahmadis.
He also said that Shiism was based on hatred and that it insulted the companions of the Prophet Mohammed. If people converted to it, it would lead Libya into endless conflict and it would be difficult to get people back to the right path, he said.
He warned imams in Libya to keep an eye of what Iran was doing in Libya and said that all the Libyans should stand against these Iranian attempts. [/restrict]
