Libyan Ulema attack Dar Al-Ifta’s condemnation of UNSMIL Draft

Tunis, 2 July 2015:

The Libyan League of Ulema (LLU) has strongly denounced the Dar Al-Ifta’s condemnation of the draft peace agreement . . .[restrict]presented by UNSMIL to the Dialogue delegates in Skhirat, Morocco.

The Dar Al-Ifta, the Fatwa organisation run by Sheikh Sadek Al-Ghariani, the man sacked by the House of Representatives as Libya’s Grand Mufti but accepted by the Libya Dawn regime in Tripoli, condemned of the draft earlier this week, saying it was un-Islamic on the basis that it permitted non-Muslims to exercise power over a Muslim state, the Supreme Court ruling dismissing the House of Representatives was not being followed, and it was opened the door to criminals to take power.

“It is absolutely abominable that the people who are expected to spread peace and support reconciliation initiatives incessantly try to foil such good efforts by issuing fatwas that lead to violence and divide the people in a country that is already suffering from blood shedding and lack of security”, read the statement from the LLU, which represents the mainstream Maliki School of Islam in Libya.

The LLU said that the Dar Al-Ifar’s views were partisan and theologically wrong.

“They should have pointed to the real people who actually subjugated the sovereignty of the country to foreign will,” the Ulema stated, noting that UNSMIL’s draft had in fact affirmed a commitment to Libya’s sovereignty and rejection of foreign interference in its preamble.

As for the Supreme Court ruling, it was invalid because it had been made under duress, the Ulema said, while the claim that the Draft would empower criminals was false because it specifically called for criminals to be brought to justice.

The LLU accused the Dar Al-Ifta of trying to “to abort the [UNSMIL] initiatives by putting preconditions for achieving the urgently needed reconciliation”.

Those behind its fatwa and other similar rulings should repent and ask God’s forgiveness, it said.

Libyans want the Skhirat Dialogue to succeed, the Ulema said.

“We must do our best to put an end to the state of anarchy, blood shedding, looting funds, and other heinous crimes. We must restore security, collectively contribute to the ongoing reconciliation efforts, and spread peace and tolerance in all our communities by all means because the Libyan people are suffering from this mayhem,” Ordinary Libyans were suffering too much. There had to be reconciliation and Islamic scholars had to be all the mre involved in that that because those who promoted reconciliation would be rewarded by God, the statement said.
