Tripoli, 21 May:

The High National Election Commission (HNEC) announced that as of the end of Saturday 19 May, the . . .[restrict]number of Libyans that had registered for the 19 June National Congress elections had passed the 2.47 million mark – or 72 percent of the 3.4 million potential Libya voters.

Today is the last day for registration for the National Congress elections. The National Congress will have a huge task ahead of it over the next year.

The 200 person Congress will choose a ‘Committee of 60’ experts from without it, within 30 days of its first meeting to draft Libya’s constitution. This ‘Committee of 60’ would in turn have to present a constitution to Congress within 60 days. The Congress will have to approve it and once approved it will be put to the Libyan public in a referendum.
