Tripoli, 22 May 22, 2014:
Protesters stormed the Sirte Oil Company (SOC) headquarters in Brega yesterday, forcing the . . .[restrict]company to stop operations.
It is believed that the protesters were angry because they had been promised jobs a month ago but still have not started work.
“There was a demonstration a while ago, and in response, we agreed to hire 1,26o locals. However, we couldn’t take them all at once, so they came and forced the closure of the company,” explained Ahmed Al-Sharkasi, an official at SOC.
The SOC operates a number of oilfields, including Nasser, Raguba, Zelten and Al-Tahadi each of which normally produce between 8,000 and 75,000 barrels per day. At the beginning of the month, demonstrators forced the closure of the Raguba field.
It is not known when the SOC will be able to resume operations on the oilfields. [/restrict]
