Lithuanian-based charter airline Small Planet Airlines which took over flying Afriqiyah’s three European routes from . . .[restrict]Tripoli at the beginning of March, is expected to continue its wet-lease operation until the end of April.
Under the wet-lease deal, two of the airline’s Airbus A320s are flying to London Gatwick, Paris Charles De Gaulle and Dusseldorf. It is also flying some other regional routes for Afiqiyah as part of the minimal 200-hour deal. The agreement is for two months but could be extended for a slightly longer period, airline sources indicate.
Because of the ban on Libyan carriers flying to EU destinations because of standards issues, the routes had been operated by Tunsair, but it pulled out at the beginning of March needing its aircraft ahead of the summer schedule, according to Afriqiyah.
Afriqiyah is currently negotiating over re-registering some of its aircraft which would permit it to fly into Europe. [/restrict]
