Libyans arrested over suspicious death of Tunisian woman

The woman is believed to have fallen from a third floor flat

The woman is believed to have fallen from the third floor of this apartment block

Tunis, 11 August 2013:

Two men, said to be Libyans, have been arrested in Tunisia in connection with the death of . . .[restrict]a woman in suspicious circumstances.

The woman died early yesterday morning in the Tunisian town of Sousse, after apparently falling from the third floor of a block of flats, according to Tunisian radio station Jawhara FM.

The victim, who was reportedly wearing a blonde wig, was found lying on the ground outside the flats at around 9 am this morning. A witness said she had been badly beaten and was covered in bruises and wounds. The emergency services were called and the woman was taken to a nearby hospital. She died a few hours later from an internal haemorrhage.

A forensic examination of the woman’s body indicated that the woman had been murdered, according to Jawhara FM.

Before the incident, neighbours reportedly heard screams coming from a flat on the third floor. They said a woman was heard shouting: “Leave me alone, what did I do to you?”

One man handed himself in to the police and another was arrested near the crime scene.

A Sousse resident told the Libya Herald that some Libyans in the Khezama Sousse area where the incident took place have had their cars vandalised in retaliation for the killing.

Earlier reports circulating on the internet said that two women, alleged to be prostitutes, had been badly beaten and killed by two Libyan men holidaying in Tunisia. The death of a second woman, however, has not been confirmed.

Four Libyans are currently serving long jail sentences in Tunisia found guilty of murdering Tunisian prostitutes in 2011. In the two separate incidents, both women died after falling from apartment balconies. The four still deny murder, citing accident and misadventure as the cause of the death.
