With the participation of some of the world’s leading healthcare companies, the workshop aimed to highlight the world-class goods and services these companies provide and to engage closely with key Libyan government stakeholders.
Challenges regarding payment
U.S. healthcare companies face challenges when operating in Libya, particularly regarding payments. This workshop brought together key stakeholders to identify challenges in the process and start a discussion on how to improve the situation.
Participating U.S. companies were Abbott, AbbVie, GE Healthcare, IQVIA, Medtronic, MSD and Pfizer. Presentations given by the companies included topics such as:
– Pharmaceutical Illicit Trade: A Threat for Patient Safety

Important Libyan stakeholders participated, including Acting Minister of Health Mohamed Al-Ghoj and Haider El Sayeh, Director General of the National Centre for Disease Control and Head of the National Cancer Control Authority. U.S. companies had the opportunity to hold one-on-one meetings with Minister Al-Ghoj.
Mike LaRocque, the Embassy Commercial and Economic Officer, represented the U.S. Embassy and used the event to engage closely with U.S. companies present and Libyan government stakeholders.
During the Healthcare Workshop, AmCham Libya was excited to support a U.S. Department of State virtual event highlighting the Libyan health sector. For the first time, Libya was showcased through the U.S. State Department Direct Line programme, which highlights commercial programmes of interest around the world. Presented by the U.S. Embassy and the Minister of Health, the event highlighted opportunities for U.S. companies in the Libyan healthcare sector and conveyed that the U.S. Government encourages U.S. companies to engage in Libya.
