The Maltese Embassy in Tripoli reported that Malta and Libya signed a Memorandum of Understanding for Joint Cooperation to develop an energy interconnector between Malta and Libya.

The agreement was signed in Tripoli during a bilateral visit yesterday by the Robert Abela, Prime Minister of Malta, accompanied by Byron Camilleri Minister for the Interior, Security, Reforms and Equality and Miriam Dalli, Minister for the Environment, Energy and Enterprise.

During a meeting with Tripoli-based Libyan Prime Minister of Libya, Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba, and Ministers for Foreign Affairs, Interior and Oil and Gas of Libya, themes of energy, security and economic cooperation between the two countries were discussed.

Direct flights
The Maltese embassy reported that the two sides also discussed the readiness for more commercial collaboration between Malta and Libya which could be strengthened with the possibility of an increase in direct flights between the two countries and the expansion of Maltese businesses in North Africa.

Meanwhile, during the press conference, Malta’s Prime Minister remarked that “Libya has a strong potential to generate renewable energy and in the context of this country’s willingness to be a strategic partner with the European Union it leads to Malta being ready to serve as a centre for green energy that connects Europe with Africa”.
