Abducted HoR member Sirgiwa still missing, HRW calls for active investigation

London, 21 August 2019:

House of Representatives (HoR) member Ms. Siham Sirgiwa is still missing over a month after her abduction.

She had been abducted from her home in the eastern city of Benghazi on 17 July.

During the abduction the attackers had also shot her husband and one other person. It is reported that her husband had gunshot wounds to his eye and leg and is in a Benghazi hospital.

It is unclear why Sirgiwa was abducted, but it is widely accepted that it was for her outspoken opposition to the continuing military assault by Hafter’s LNA on the capital Tripoli.

In an interview on 16 July, the night before she was abducted, with the pro-LNA TV station, Al-Hadath, Sirgiwa had reiterated her opposition to the ongoing armed conflict in Tripoli. She stated her support for a unity government in Libya and denounced “extremists” on both sides of the conflict.

Last Friday, Human Rights Watch (HRW) had called on the eastern-based Libyan Interim Government, aligned to the HoR and Khalifa Hafter and his Libyan National Army (LNA), to exert all possible efforts to ensure the safe return of Sirgiwa,
