Malta, 27 January 2017:
The former mayor of Tripoli, Mahdi Al-Harathi, and a Libyan friend were subject to a knife attack at a café in Malta on Wednesday morning. Two men are said to have lunged at them, one of them with a knive, allegedly accusing them of having helped bring down the Qaddafi regime.
Harathi who was a revolutionary commander in 2011, was not hurt but the other man, Haitem Nassradin, suffered slight injuries.
The two attackers, named as Mohammed Ahneish and Belaid Farag, pleaded guilty to a breach of the peace in court today, and Ahneish was fined €50, Farag €30. Farag who also admitted possession of a knife was fined an additional €116.47 for the offence.
The penalty could have been higher had not both Harathi and Nassradin withdrawn criminal complaints against the two others.
