The Tripoli based Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation reported yesterday that a coordination meeting was held yesterday at the Ministry’s Tripoli headquarters to discuss ways to advance the implementation of the mutual understandings with Algeria regarding the reopening of the Ghadames–Debdeb border crossing.
The Ministry said the meeting comes as part of the follow-up on the implementation of the provisions of the minutes of the meeting of the Libyan-Algerian Technical Experts Team tasked with reopening the Ghadames–Debdeb border crossing, signed in Algeria on 9 November 2023, and the outcomes of the minutes of the preparatory experts’ meeting for the fifteenth (15th) session of the Libyan-Algerian Joint High Executive Committee, signed in Tripoli on 29 January 2026, which included, among other matters, the two sides’ affirmation of their determination to commence operations at the crossing before the end of 2026,
The meeting was chaired by Ambassador Ashraf Mohammed Al-Taieb, Director of the International Cooperation Department, and attended by representatives of several Libyan sectors and authorities concerned with the border crossing.
Participants stressed the importance of strengthening coordination between the Libyan and Algerian sides, reflecting their shared commitment to reopening this vital border point, given its importance in facilitating the movement of people and goods, promoting trade, and enhancing connectivity between the two countries, in line with arrangements in place at border crossings with neighbouring countries.
The meeting also reviewed the mechanisms and procedures required to reopen the crossing in accordance with the applicable laws, legislation, and regulations. Emphasis was placed on the need for coordination among all relevant agencies and authorities, completion of the necessary operational, logistical, and staffing arrangements, and provision of the requirements and resources needed to ensure the crossing’s readiness and resumption of operations in accordance with the approved frameworks and procedures.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said this meeting reflects its commitment to following up on the implementation of bilateral agreements and understandings with Algeria and strengthening cooperation in a manner that serves the mutual interests of the two countries.
