The Acting Minister of Industry and Minerals, Mustafa Al-Samou, launched the trial version of the national system for the digital mineral map of Libya, during a meeting held at the Ministry’s headquarters last Wednesday (12 August).
The Ministry said the step comes within the framework of its direction towards employing digital technologies and geological data to support the mining sector, and providing a national information base that contributes to developing mineral exploration work, raising the efficiency of natural resource management, and enhancing investment opportunities in this sector.
The Minister stressed during the meeting that the launch of the system represents a strategic step towards enhancing digital transformation in the mining sector, by providing accurate and reliable geological data and information, which contributes to supporting decision-making, attracting investments, and directing planning and exploration work towards the optimal exploitation of the mineral resources that Libya abounds with.
The trial version of the system includes a database containing about 1,200 ores and mineral indicators, extracted from the results of regional geological mapping work. It also includes digital geological maps and databases at a scale of 1:250,000, and a database that runs on the SQL system, allowing for querying, accessing and analysing information according to the standards and technical needs of users.
The launch of the system comes within the efforts of the Ministry of Industry and Minerals to develop the information infrastructure of the mining sector, and move from traditional data management methods to a modern digital system based on documented geological information and spatial databases, which enhances planning efficiency, supports investment decisions, and paves the way for building an integrated national system for managing and investing in mineral resources in Libya.
