Libya’s MedSky is to launch flights between Benghazi’s Benina Airport and Dusseldorf, MedSky’s Executive Director Siraj Al-Fitouri revealed in a social media post.
The flights have been officially listed by Dusseldorf airport to start on 4 August.
It is the first time in the history of Benghazi that there is a direct route with Germany.
Al Fitouri said ‘‘this historic step represents a new milestone in the journey of Libyan civil aviation and opens wide horizons for the people of our nation.
This flight is not just a new air route; it is an achievement of great significance and a message confirming that Libya can regain its rightful place among nations, becoming a true gateway connecting Europe to the African continent, and a regional hub for air traffic.
At MedSky Company, we have taken upon ourselves the responsibility of being part of the nation-building project and contributing all we can to repositioning Libya on the map of international air transport. We believe that serving the Libyan citizen and raising our country's name in international forums is a national responsibility before it is a commercial success.
More direct flights to Europe to come
The Board of Directors, the company owners, all its employees and I promise you, that this journey will not be the end, but only the beginning. We have ambitious plans to add more direct European destinations from Libya, as well as from various Libyan airports, so that travel to and from Libya becomes easier, more expansive, and more connected to the world.
Our ambition is greater than opening an air route; our ambition is for the world to see Libya in a new light, a nation rising through the will of its people, regaining its standing, and opening its doors to communication, cooperation, and openness. We believe that the future will be brighter, and that what has been achieved today is the beginning of a series of accomplishments that will contribute to serving our beloved country and our esteemed citizens’’.
It will be recalled that MedSky launched its direct flight service to Dusseldorf from Tripoli on 17 May.
MedSky also operates European flights to Athens, Malta, Rome, Milano and Madrid. It has also hinted at starting a flight to London.
