Libya’s Ministry of Transport reported today that the National Meteorological Centre’s weather monitoring station in Azizia recorded the highest temperature in Libya so far this month, reaching 50°C.
Libya is currently going through an extreme heatwave.
It reported that the figure was obtained from the maximum-reading thermometer inside the monitoring enclosure, as shown in the attached video.
The Ministry said this reading—recorded in accordance with the technical standards adopted by meteorological stations—confirms that Azizia remains one of the areas in Libya most susceptible to extreme heat, particularly during intense heatwaves.
These current readings, it added, highlight Azizia's exceptional climatic nature and underscore the need to view historical climate records through a scientific lens; the area has long been known for recording extremely high temperatures when atmospheric conditions align.
Azizia'a 1922 world record temperature invalidated
Azizia is located 46 kms south of Tripoli. The town was once known for the highest recorded temperature in the world of 57.8°C recorded in September 1922. However, the World Meteorological Organisation invalidated the record in 2012 after finding problems with the measurement.
