Libya's House of Representatives Speaker, Ageela Saleh, confirmed today that Lieutenant General Hussein Al-Ayeb is to continue performing his duties as head of the Libyan Intelligence Service with full legal authority.
Saleh said this is in order to ensure the smooth functioning of operations and the stability of sovereign institutions.
He emphasized the necessity of protecting the Service’s headquarters and documents from any unlawful actions.
He also required the Intelligence Service's personnel to adhere to constitutional legitimacy and to submit periodic reports to the parliamentary leadership regarding operational developments and national security.
It will be recalled that on 29 June the Presidency Council, headed by Mohamed Al-Menfi, issued decisions to relieve Hussein Al-Ayeb of his duties as head of the General Intelligence Service, and to assign Abdelmajid Al-Maligta as head of the service. It also appointed Abdulshafi Al-Juwaifi as Deputy Head.
However, Musa Al-Koni, Member of the Presidency Council denied he had approved the changing of the head of General Intelligence.
Equally, House of Representatives Speaker, Ageela Saleh also stated that the timing of these sovereign position appointments by the Presidency Council, without consulting other bodies, is meant to cause political turbulence.
