Production begins at Kufra Grain Mill – part of wider effort by NDA to reduce food imports and improve food security

Actual production has begun at the grain mill belonging to the Kufra Production Project, the eastern based branch of the Libyan official state news agency, LANA, reported last Sunday (5 April).

The report said this step demonstrates a clear trend towards reviving stalled agricultural and industrial projects and enhancing food security in the country. The mill’s operation commenced after the completion of maintenance and rehabilitation work, enabling it to operate at full capacity.

Mohamed Boushleif, head of the project’s media office, confirmed to the LANA that this step represents a significant turning point in the project’s trajectory. He explained that the mill has already begun distributing flour in local markets in 50-kilogram and 25-kilogram packages to meet citizens’ needs and contribute to market stability.

Boushleif indicated that the resumption of production is the result of continuous efforts by the National Development Agency (NDA), within a comprehensive plan to restart vital, stalled facilities. This aims to boost local production and reduce reliance on imports.

He clarified that the objective of this step is to alleviate the cost of living for citizens by providing flour at affordable prices. Well-studied and competitively priced, lower than parallel market prices, which will create a relative balance in the prices of basic commodities and improve purchasing power.

He added that the factory’s return to operation represents direct support for the local economy, especially in light of the challenges associated with high import costs and supply chain disruptions. He emphasized that providing a locally produced product of suitable quality and at a reasonable price is an important step towards achieving economic stability.

Bushleif concluded his statement by affirming that this achievement marks the beginning of a new phase of sustainable production. He noted that the project aims to expand its activities and increase operational efficiency in the coming period, thus strengthening its role as a key contributor to supporting national food security.

He also stressed that the reactivation of the grain mill reflects the ability of national institutions to resume their operations and transform stalled projects into active elements in supporting development, thereby achieving economic balance and serving the interests of citizens throughout the country.

On the wider front, it will be recalled that the Hafter-controlled NDA has been reactivating agricultural projects across the east and south of Libya, including the many single-pivot irrigation agricultural projects.
