One-million olive tree project in Tarhuna launched – first project in North Africa to grow olive trees using linear pivot irrigation systems

A one-million olive tree project using Valley Linear Pivot Irrigation Technology is to be launched in Tarhuna by the Great Man-Made River Water Utilization Authority and Andalus Agro-Technic (Photo: Andalus Agro-Technic).

Officials from the Great Man-Made River Water Utilization Authority, accompanied by Andalus Agro-Technic, conducted a field visit yesterday to the Wadi Tajmoud project site in the Tarhuna mountain region, where preparations are underway for an ambitious one-million olive tree cultivation project.

The visit focused on reviewing the project’s water utilization strategy and agricultural infrastructure, which is set to introduce US company Valley (Valmont) Linear Pivot Irrigation technology for large-scale olive farming.

Once implemented, the US company’s local distributer Andalus Agro-Technic said, this initiative will mark the first project of its kind in North Africa to grow olive trees using linear pivot irrigation systems.

Valley Linear Pivot Irrigation Technology, such as the Valley Rainger and Universal linear, maximizes water application efficiency (up to 98% coverage) for square or rectangular fields. These systems move in a straight line, utilizing GPS, ditch-fed, or hose-drag technology to reduce labour by 50% compared to traditional methods. Key benefits include reduced water usage, integrated chemigation/fertigation, and remote management.
