The Libyan Customs Authority reported last Thursday (11 December) that it had successfully thwarted two attempts to smuggle foreign currency at Tripoli’s Mitiga Airport within 24 hours.
In the first operation, the Investigations Unit of the Anti-Smuggling and Narcotics Department in Tripoli seized US$ 39,800 hidden in the luggage of a passenger traveling to Turkey, which was not declared to the Customs Office.
In the second operation, another individual was found carrying US$ 50,000 and €30,000, also undeclared.
This brings the total seized amounts in both operations to US$ 89,800 and €30,000.
The Customs Authority stressed that these seizures reflect its ongoing fight against smuggling and the need for travellers to declare funds exceeding LD 200 or USD 10,000 (or equivalent) to customs.
