Libyan Railroads and the Russian Railways Company (RZhD), Libya branch, discussed ways to activate the stalled Sirte-Benghazi rail project (Contract No. 5-2008).
Libyan Railroads reported that the discussions took place during an extensive meeting yesterday at its Tripoli headquarters between its Chairman, Saeed Al-Kilani, and the Director of RZhD’s Libya branch, and the First Secretary of the Russian Embassy in Tripoli.
The Vice-Chairman of the Libyan Railroads Board, Ibrik Musa and several directors of departments and offices of Libyan Railroads were also present.
RZhD began work on the then $4.5 billion project to link Benghazi and Sirte with a 554 km railway line in August 2008. The company brought in track laying machinery, flat wagons and a 100-tonne crane. It also built accommodation for 400 workers at what would become Ras Lanuf station. During construction 3,500 Libyan and Russian workers were to be employed.
