The Attorney General’s Office announced today that it had ordered the detention of those responsible for importing into Libya 300 tons of sugar that are unfit for human consumption. The case was highlighted by actions of the Misrata Anti-Smuggling and Narcotics Department. Those responsible had forged documents and had attempted to enter the shipment into Libya after it had been refused entry by Tunisian authorities.

As a result, the Attorney General’s Office ordered:

  • The detention of the ship’s captain and his assistant in pretrial detention, pending investigation.
  • It instructed the seizure authority to seize the means of transport; and shipment.
  • And it asked law enforcement agencies to work on arresting and bringing the person in charge of the import process.
